Simple Present s/es/ies Rules - Third Person Singular

In the simple present tense, add -s to most verbs for third-person singular subjects (he, she, it). Use -es for verbs ending in -o, -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, or -z. If a verb ends in a consonant + y, change the y to -ies. For vowels + y, just add -s. 

Simple Present S/ES Rules (Third Person Singular) 

General Rule (Add -s): Used for most verbs.

  • Work > works
  • Play > plays
  • Live > lives

Verbs ending in -o, -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -z (Add -es):

  • Go > goes
  • Watch > watches
  • Wash > washes
  • Kiss > kisses
  • Fix > fixes

Consonant + y (Change y to -ies):

  • Study > studies
  • Fly > flies
  • Cry > cries

Vowel + y (Add -s):

  • Say > says
  • Enjoy > enjoys

Irregular Verbs:

  • Have > has
  • Do > does 

When to use: These rules apply only to affirmative sentences with he, she, it, or singular nouns (e.g., "the dog," "my father", "my mother").
